How it's made
US-manufactured, mostly US materials
General's Cedar Pointe Extra Soft #1 Pencils are made entirely at General Pencil Company's Jersey City, New Jersey factory using California-grown incense cedar that has been sustainably harvested for over a century. The raw, uncoated natural wood barrel — free of any lacquer or sealant — gives a warm, natural grip that flows seamlessly into the tip, while the No. 1/B extra-soft graphite core lays down a smooth, dark line ideal for writing, sketching, and shading. The signature Semi-Hex® shape prevents rolling off desks, and the soft black eraser and black ferrule give the pencil a clean, minimalist look unchanged since 1889.

Why the USAmade Score™ is 7/10
General Pencil Company has manufactured in Jersey City, New Jersey since 1889 — making it one of the oldest continuously operating pencil factories in the United States. The cedar casing — the dominant material by volume of the pencil — is explicitly California-grown incense cedar, responsibly harvested to strict environmental standards. The graphite core is a globally mined mineral (no commercial US graphite mining for pencil grade exists at scale), and the eraser and ferrule are standard commodity components, which prevents a 10 but the dominant wood content being domestic-sourced earns a firm 7.
