How it's made
US-manufactured, mostly imported materials
Tabasco Original Red Sauce is a three-ingredient Louisiana-style hot sauce — aged red pepper mash, Avery Island salt, and distilled vinegar — fermented and aged up to three years in white oak barrels before bottling, delivering a signature vinegar-forward heat rated 2,500–5,000 SHU. Since 1868, it has been produced by the McIlhenny family on Avery Island, Louisiana, and is now sold in over 195 countries.
Why the USAmade Score™ is 5/10
McIlhenny Company produces Tabasco entirely on Avery Island, Louisiana — fermenting, aging in white oak barrels for up to three years, blending, and bottling all occur in the USA. However, the volume of pepper mash required for worldwide production has long exceeded what Avery Island alone can supply, and McIlhenny has acknowledged that peppers are grown under contract in Central and South America (primarily Venezuela historically, now other Latin American countries). The Avery Island salt and US-sourced distilled vinegar are domestic, but the primary ingredient — red pepper mash — is largely imported, placing this at 5.
